When I was growing up in Texas, we called them “skeeter eaters”. I’m a substitute teacher in Florida now, and I have to persuade kids occasionally that they’re not going to bite or sting them, and that they’re not poisonous. They’re a hoot!
I’ve heard people call them “mosquito eaters”, and it annoys me because it ruins the rhyme and it seems so obvious that those clumsy things cannot hunt mosquitoes.
But they can hunt skeeters?
